My cousins and I had decided to make a project some time back. We wanted to make a video using stop motion animation. One of my cousins is 5 and the other one is 7. In order to make the videos below, we had to start at the very beginning; write their stories, edit their own stories, make pictures to go along with their stories, record themselves reading their story out loud, record sound effects, make a storyboard, take images and videos of their stories!!
It was a hard task to get 2 kids to work on a task consistently without getting bored but I was surprised at how impressive their work was. I decided that I was only going to guide them through the process and tell them what to do – they did everything else! They even decided what they wanted on their story board and wrote their own stories without any help from adults.
The project took a week in all. We had started during the half-term but the project had to be stopped because I had my exams. Now that we have our summer holidays, we filmed and edited the film. Well, I edited the film. Editing is not the skills I expect two children to know. That said, they were present throughout the process giving me little tips on their video.
The reason why I like running these projects with kids is because it isn’t just fun or exciting but it’s also productive. During school they are taught how to draw or write but it is very controlled and boring so by taking part in projects like these not only were they learning team-work and project skills, but they were making use of their creative minds in impressive ways. This was particularly good for my 7 y/o cousin who runs in the opposite direction at the mention of writing or drawing whereas the 5 y/o was completely in her comfort zone. And besides, it’s x10 better than playing with toys or watching TV mindlessly.
Our next few projects are: Making a PPT presentation on Egypt or “Amazing Animals of the Amazon”, and making a cool building/object in SketchUp. Both programs are incredibly easy to learn and kids will enjoy doing it mainly because they get to see their end result!
Unfortunately, I can’t upload my cousin’s video on Monsters because his face is in it and I don’t want him on the internet right now but here is a link to my other cousin’s video.
